Visit to Port Adelaide Enfield Council
Rod and I are pleased to join you at the Junction Community Centre for our visit to the City of Port Adelaide Enfield.
It’s been our pleasure to spend time in your Council area during my term.
We’ve engaged with students on a range of school visits, including to Torrens Valley Christian School and Mount Carmel College.
We have also welcomed schools from your district to Government House for tours, including the Indie School and Le Fevre High School.
I’ve enjoyed spending time on your beautiful coastline, at events for the Cruising Yacht Club of SA at North Haven.
Speaking of boats, last year I explored with great interest the City of Adelaide Clipper Ship, which Peter Christopher, your Joint Citizen of the Year, was intimately involved in bringing to Adelaide.
I also celebrated the Largs Bay RSL 75th anniversary at their Carnarvon Terrace rooms. I’m proud to say my late father was a former President of the sub-branch.
Last year I was also pleased to speak at the South Australia Police Graduation Ceremony for Course 64 at Taperoo, as well as attend the
National Police Remembrance Day Memorial Service.
And I recall opening a community art exhibition a couple of years ago and hearing Rod sing with the Adelaide Male Voice Choir at the Maritime Museum!
I trust you are proud that the City of Port Adelaide Enfield is rich with indigenous and settler history, as a home to generations of Kaurna and as the location determined by Colonel Light to be Adelaide’s port.
“We Walk Together on Kaurna Country” forms parts of your 10-year city vision, and I am pleased to learn about the Council’s work celebrating First Nations culture and bringing indigenous and non-indigenous people together.
It was great to tour the construction of Yitpi Yartapuultiku this morning, and to envisage the space at completion.
I thank the Mayor and CEO for hosting Rod and me today, and coordinating our visit.
I look forward to speaking with you today and visiting more of Port Adelaide Enfield this afternoon.
