Reception for VIEW Clubs of Australia 65 year anniversary

Rod and I warmly welcome you to Government House to celebrate VIEW Clubs of Australia’s 65th anniversary and the work of VIEW Clubs in South Australia.

As Governor it is my privilege, with Rod, to visit schools across the state and to engage with students from all backgrounds and walks of life.

These visits have reinforced my belief that education has the power to change lives and break the cycle of disadvantage.

To make the most of their education, some children and young people need extra emotional, practical and financial support.

The Smith Family generously provides this support to families across the country.

For more than 20 years, my family has been proud to support students through the Smith Family, playing a small part to help young Australians equip themselves for bright and fulfilling futures.

As VIEW members, you too understand the importance of quality education for all young South Australians, no matter their circumstances of birth.

It’s a driving force behind joining a VIEW Club, alongside the opportunity for friendship and camaraderie with fellow members.

This year VIEW celebrates 65 years of operation in Australia.

While its presence in our state is shorter, having just passed a quarter of a century, its contribution has been significant.

Last November you celebrated the creation of the Adelaide East VIEW Club, the twentieth club in South Australia.

I also congratulate local VIEW clubs on their collective fundraising efforts.

Since 1999, South Australian members have raised more than $1.8 million for The Smith Family – an outstanding achievement.

I note the many and varied ways in which you have supported the Smith Family and its young clients, such as donating stationery, sewing library bags, and knitting reading mats.

Others of you have volunteered in The Smith Family offices, helping with administrative tasks, and even at this year’s Tour Down Under, as all-important traffic marshalls!

I thank you all for your ongoing commitment to supporting young South Australians with their education.

I am pleased that belonging to a VIEW Club also gives you, its members, the opportunity to forge new friendships and connections.

Research tells us that loneliness and lack of purpose can both adversely affect our health, and it’s great to know that a VIEW membership can help with both!

Friends,

In 2025 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Australian Honours System.

These awards, among them the Order of Australia, are announced on Australia Day and the King’s Birthday public holidays each year.

The Order of Australia recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service to, or exceptional achievement within, our community.

As VIEW members, are their people among you who might be deserving of such an award?

I encourage you to consider making a nomination.

More information is available on the Governor-General’s website, and we have a display of Order of Australia medals in the library for your interest.

Government House also offers free guided tours for community groups.

We would be pleased to welcome your members into the house, as we did last year for the Prospect VIEW Club.

Lastly, the next Government House Open Day is taking place on Sunday 11 May, Mother’s Day, from 10am-2pm.

We would love to see you and your families here on the day to explore historical and contemporary displays, and explore the gardens, in conjunction with the SA History Festival.

More information is available on the Government House website.

Congratulations to all VIEW members on reaching the 65th anniversary of your national organisation.

I wish you the very best as you continue working together in support of South Australian young people and their futures.
