Reception for the Childhood Cancer Association during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Rod and I warmly welcome you all to Government House.

As patrons of the Childhood Cancer Association, we understand the transformative effect of the contributions you all make – through your donations, volunteering, fundraising and the support you give.

During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month there is much I could say about cancer and the impact your Association has.

For me, the most important observations are those which come directly from your community – from clients such as Holly Mead and her mother Kim, who are here this evening.

Holly was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of six.

Shortly, we will watch a film which features both mother and daughter.

In the video Holly recalls how, when her family received the cancer diagnosis, “everything was messy”.

And Kim remembers how the swift support from the Association “felt like a big hug”.

Holly, thank you for telling it like it is – and for describing cancer’s impact in a way that makes sense to people of all ages.

And Kim – thank you for encapsulating how it feels to receive the support that is made possible by the contributions of the people here tonight.

Each year, the Childhood Cancer Association supports more than 400 South Australian families.

I thank you all for your efforts to deliver them crucial assistance, including accommodation, education support, professional counselling and other vital services.

I am also pleased to hear of the association’s plans to design new services, focusing on good nutrition and regular exercise, to support children during and after their treatment.

Friends,

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month reminds us that we are connected by a common purpose: supporting South Australian children and their families to navigate one of the most difficult periods of their lives.

Thank you all, in your respective ways, for helping families to feel supported, empowered and prepared: like a warm hug that makes everything feel a little less messy.
