Reception for Order of Australia Association SA Student Citizenship Awards
Rod and I are very pleased to welcome you all to Government House to celebrate the ‘top 10’ recipients of the Order of Australia Association – South Australia Branch’s 2024 Student Citizenship Awards.
Congratulations!
Your achievements serve to remind everyone of the contributions that young people are making.
As Governor, I have the privilege to visit many secondary schools across the state with Rod and to meet students who are actively engaged in their communities.
Through the School Visit Program, we have seen first-hand the ways in which young people like yourselves are making a difference.
You are not merely talking about change; you are actively shaping it, putting in the time, effort, and commitment to make our community a better place for all.
I am impressed that, while juggling the demands of your Year 11 and 12 studies, you have made time to serve in leadership roles, volunteer, and advocate for those in need.
Some of you have worked on social justice initiatives, standing up for equality and fairness.
Others have dedicated their time to supporting the homeless and advocating for those left behind in society.
We have students who have worked to foster reconciliation and understanding between cultures.
And many of you have dedicated hours to volunteering with organisations such as aged care services, Fred’s Van, Puddle Jumpers, and the Country Fire Service.
You have demonstrated that being an active citizen is not just about fulfilling your own responsibilities – it’s about engaging with the world, confronting injustice, and working to make a difference in the lives of others.
You have shown compassion. You have drawn on your own experience and the experience of others to determine what actions to take.
These and other qualities will serve you well throughout your lives as you continue to care for others and stand up for your values.
I want to recognise your teachers, who not only inspire you in your academic work, but encourage you to engage with the world and develop a sense of responsibility toward others.
I was pleased to learn that this year, a special certificate was sent to the nominating teacher from each participating school and college in recognition of the part they play.
Perhaps a special certificate should be sent to parents too!
I acknowledge the Order of Australia Association’s commitment to recognising and fostering citizenship in young South Australians.
Through your work and that of your assessors, we can shine a light on the contributions of Year 11 and 12 students and encourage others to follow their lead.
Additionally, I specially acknowledge the late Keith “Chook” Fowler OAM, whom I had the pleasure of meeting many times and invested with his Order of Australia Medal, whose generous donation has made it possible to present a special medallion to each award recipient.
Chook was a World War II veteran and a prisoner of war survivor, whose commitment to young people, leadership, and service is reflected in the medallions you will receive today.
To our young awardees, congratulations once again on your outstanding achievements.
You should be proud of all you have accomplished, but know too, that your journey does not end here.
The values that have guided you thus far – your compassion, sense of justice, and leadership – will continue to serve you throughout your lives.
The future is in excellent hands with leaders like you.
