Passing of the First Nations Voice Bill 2023
It is my great pleasure as South Australia’s 36th Governor to give assent to the First Nations Voice Bill 2023.
Executive Council, the process by which government ministers present bills for my assent, is normally private but today, for the very best of reasons, took place before you all.
Nearly 200 years ago, good intentions toward Aboriginal people – proclaimed by our first Governor - were encompassed in the foundational documents of our state.
History shows, regrettably, they did not come to fruition.
Today, I restate my commitment to supporting the process of reconciliation in our state, and to working side by side with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to achieve this goal.
Thank you everyone for your presence today to witness this historic occasion.
