JettyFest100
It is my pleasure to be here this evening to launch JettyFest 100.
It’s great to see people gathering on beach and, a little later this evening, I hear there will be a sea of solar powered lights to add to the festive energy!
On 10 December 1921 – exactly one hundred years ago – the Governor of the day, Sir Archibald Weigall, officially opened the Port Noarlunga jetty.
News reports recount how Sir Archibald cut a ribbon across the jetty entrance, and then clambered up a nearby sandhill to give his speech, saying “the nearer I get to heaven the better the speech I make!”
One hundred years later, happily ensconced on this balcony, I am reminded of just how gorgeous [gesture] this area this, and how lucky South Australians are to live or visit here.
Spending time on a jetty is a quintessential childhood experience for many Australian kids.
When I was young I learned to fish from a jetty not far from here and I walked along this one on holiday last year.
There would be many thousands of South Australians, of all ages, who have spent time on the Noarlunga jetty in its long history.
From fishing to snorkelling, swimming, jumping, or taking a casual stroll with an ice cream in hand, this jetty has brought joy to so many people over the years.
It’s a place where many a fond memory has been made.
The jetty has seen great change and has demonstrated great resilience over the years.
Storms have washed away metres of jetty at a time, as well as dislodging the stairs, not to mention the constant barrage of sun, salt and footsteps.
I thank the City of Onkaparinga for maintaining the structure, so it can be enjoyed for many generations to come.
I also thank the Port Noarlunga Business & Tourism Association for driving the creation of this festival to celebrate the jetty centenary, and the many volunteers who have stepped forward to assist.
There’s a packed program of events over the weekend, with many opportunities to learn about the area’s history and take part in great entertainment.
I’m sure the fancy dress dinner parties tomorrow evening will be a hit!
I wish everyone a wonderful festival, and an enjoyable summer of spending time on the Port Noarlunga beach and jetty.

I look forward to returning one day soon for a day at the beach with my family, and another stroll along the jetty!
