District Council of Kimba 100th anniversary
It is my great honour to join you this evening to celebrate a remarkable milestone – the centenary of the District Council of Kimba.
We gather in the historic Kimba Hall – the first public building in your township – which opened its doors in 1919.
This venue holds a special place in the heart of your town, having been constructed from second-hand timber and iron transported from Cowell by horse teams.
Over the years, it has served as a school, a social hub, and a gathering place for dances and films.
It stands as a testament to the spirit of community and sense of civic pride that has defined Kimba for the past century.
On July 1, 1924, the foundation of the District Council of Kimba was laid – a pivotal moment for your community.
It emerged from the need for coordinated leadership and support, as pioneers and settlers recognised the importance of working together to build a thriving township.
Tonight, we celebrate not only the centenary of the District Council of Kimba, but also the legacy of those early visionaries who laid the foundations for what Kimba has become.
The name “Kimba”, meaning “bushfire” in Barngarla, reflects a vital aspect of your history.
Fire has historically played a crucial role in agricultural development, clearing scrub, and fostering new growth.
This symbolism is reflected in your council emblem, representing not only the essence of Kimba, but also the transformative power of fire.
In much the same way, your council serves as a force for renewal within the community, continuously striving to improve and adapt to the changing needs of its residents.
As Governor, I have the privilege of engaging with councils across South Australia.
While each council is unique, the common thread is a deep connection to community.
In regional and rural areas, this connection is particularly vital, as geographic isolation can hinder access to essential services.
Yet councils like yours work to bridge these gaps, understanding local needs, and providing tailored services that foster connection and build a strong community.
From the Kimba Pioneer Memorial Village to the recent upgrades of the Kimba Medical Centre, your council has shown commitment to the health and wellbeing of your residents.
The all-abilities playground stands as a symbol of inclusivity, ensuring that every child can play and connect with their peers.
Council’s innovative sustainability work, such as the Roora Stormwater Catchment Project, reflects a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, while providing the town with the equivalent of five Olympic pools’ worth of additional rainwater each year.
This is particularly impressive in a region with an average annual rainfall of just 339.2mm!
Your council has also fostered a vibrant cultural landscape, including your iconic silo art and murals.
The history of your council is marked by resilience, particularly in the face of challenges like the storm damage of 2022, when your community faced unprecedented rainfall.
Yet it is through these trials that the strength of your community shines.
Kimba’s recognition as a three-time winner of the Grey Nomads Award, and its success as the 2021 Agricultural Town of the Year, reflects your dedication in creating an inviting environment for both residents and visitors.
I congratulate both past and present elected members and staff, many of whom are here today, for their invaluable contributions.
May you continue to build upon the strong foundations laid by your predecessors, embodying the spirit of rejuvenation that the name "Kimba" represents.
Thank you for joining this celebration and for your ongoing commitment to making Kimba a wonderful place to live, work and visit.
