The Ballroom, part of the 1855 extensions, is regularly used for Investitures, musical evenings, presentations of awards and receptions.
Government House receptions and awards ceremonies are staged here –the more important being the Australian Honours Investitures in April and September. Receptions are held up to 2-3 times per week.
In the past, the Ballroom was sometimes used by former British Governors to auction off any of the furniture they did not wish to take back home. At one of these auctions in February 1862, the Inspector of Police was murdered by one of his former employees who had recently been sacked for drunkenness.
